Board continues 626 Nolan Street door-and-column request to June 22 for staff review

The Junta Asesora Técnica y de Cumplimiento Histórica continued a request to replace the front door and porch column at 626 Nolan Street to a June 22 hearing, directing the applicant to work with staff to identify appropriate materials and architectural profiles.

Staff recommended against approval under one finding (Finding c) and said porch columns should be preserved and repaired if feasible. The file includes a letter from the Dignity Hill neighborhood association; owners were present and the applicant spoke to the board.

Applicant Billy Teles told the board the current front door is not original and is deteriorating; he said the porch columns are covered in plastic and claimed they cannot be repaired. “La puerta principal no es la original de la casa y se está desintegrando,” Billy Teles said, explaining the request to replace the door and to change the plastic-clad columns.

Commissioners and staff discussed whether historical photos or architectural profiles could identify the original column design. Staff said field visits are not standard for this type of request and encouraged the applicant to provide pre-2005 photos or other evidence of the earlier condition. Staff and commissioners suggested working with an architect to find a compatible design and noted the board could administratively approve an alternate solution if it met guidelines.

A committee member moved that staff work with the applicant to develop an appropriate solution and that the case be continued to the June 22 hearing; roll-call attendance was recorded and the motion passed. Staff will coordinate with the applicant in the following business days to pursue photos, design profiles and administrative options.

If staff and applicant cannot agree on an administratively approvable solution, the applicant can return to a future hearing with revised materials.
