Library presents 'Kitchen Table Diaries' anthology by adult learners; staff highlight tutoring and grant funding

Sandra Riggins, community outreach supervisor for literacy services, presented "Kitchen Table Diaries," the library's newest anthology produced with adult learners and volunteer tutors. Riggins said the book contains 34 recipes and stories contributed by 25 learners representing 13 countries and that the project is the program's second anthology in two years.

Riggins described the anthology as an opportunity for learners to practice writing, editing and revising in an authentic project. She said the literacy program has been funded for over 40 years by a California State Library grant with matching funds from the City of Carlsbad and noted a partnership with MiraCosta College to offer English-as-a-Second-Language classes.

Riggins said the library held a recognition event for contributors that drew more than 90 attendees, where the library director offered remarks and learners signed copies for guests. "This book is a collection of stories and recipes written by adult learners enrolled in Carlsbad Library Literacy Services," she told trustees, and staff said participants continue to share the anthology with family and community members.

Trustees praised the project; there were no public speakers on the item. Riggins invited trustees to request copies for review and to encourage volunteer tutors to join the program.
