Town auditors prepare RFP for professional audit; responses due March 27

Town Auditor Peter Markalunas told the Selectboard on Jan. 19 that the town's three elected auditors have contacted six accounting firms and identified three that are interested in performing a professional audit of Sandgate's finances. The RFP has been presented to the Selectboard and minute taker Sandy Reidy will send it to the three firms.

Responses to the RFP are due March 27, 2026. Markalunas said the RFP process will start a discussion with the selected firm, which will recommend whether Sandgate needs a full audit or a preliminary assessment. Board members discussed whether outside firms might also perform routine auditing if elected auditors step down, but noted the town's work may be too small for some firms. Selectboard members also raised the possibility of increasing the hourly rate for elected auditors to improve recruitment; no formal rate change was recorded at this meeting.

The Selectboard expects to review responses and consider next steps following the RFP deadline.
