Council appoints Eric to at-large Denison City council seat after split votes

The Denison City Council voted to fill an at-large vacancy, appointing Eric after council members considered competing nominations and debated candidates’ availability and experience.

Council members began the discussion by noting a desire to recruit new volunteers but also by weighing short-term continuity. Supporters of the former officeholder, Pam, emphasized her prior service on streetscape and downtown projects and said she was a safe short-term choice. Other members raised concerns that the alternative candidate’s off-duty commitments—specifically coaching—could limit regular attendance and burden the rest of the council.

A motion to appoint Pam was made and received mixed support. The council later considered an alternate motion to appoint Eric; that nomination was seconded and carried in roll-call voting. Council members then discussed logistics: the appointee is not able to be sworn in at the meeting and cannot act in an official capacity until sworn, so the council tabled the swearing-in to the first meeting when the appointee can attend.

Council members thanked Pam for her willingness to serve and for her prior service to the city. The council’s discussion repeatedly referenced the need for visible, reliable attendance for the remainder of the interim term and the possibility that the appointee will stand for election when the seat comes up.
