Council adopts Traffic Safety and Mobility Commission work plan, prioritizes Safe Routes to School projects

Carlsbad's City Traffic Engineer presented the Traffic Safety and Mobility Commission's FY 26–27 work plan and the council unanimously adopted the resolution approving it. John Kim said the plan has two primary goals: to review staff recommendations on transportation projects (including CIP items, traffic signals and traffic calming) and to focus on safety and mobility around school locations.

Kim said the city will move forward with Safe Routes to School planning for Jefferson Elementary and noted work with Oaks Elementary and Bridal Schools; he also confirmed that a Safe Routes plan for Kelly Elementary is moving forward. "Typically, we contact schools on, identified basis. We're gonna be moving forward with the Safe Routes to School for Jefferson Elementary, and that'll be included in another project," Kim said. The commission's volunteer members, represented at the meeting by Commissioner Tom Schuch, urged continued council support.

Councilmembers thanked the commission for its volunteer work and emphasized the topic's prominence in constituent emails and inquiries. After discussion a motion to adopt the work plan passed unanimously.
