Board debates fixes after repeated vandalism of bridge lights and railing cables

The board addressed ongoing vandalism and maintenance decisions for the skatepark and pedestrian bridge, including damaged lights and frayed crossing cables.

Staff reported multiple incidents of lights removed or fixtures damaged and uncertainty whether damage was theft or deliberate destruction. Gavin said the lights are residential‑grade battery/solar units and that replacements cost about $20 apiece; some fixtures had been taken into the creek. He noted the cable material is strong but the attachment hardware is the typical failure point.

Options discussed included using construction adhesive, switching to more tamper‑resistant fixtures or leaving small decorative lights unreplaced to avoid repetitive maintenance, requesting a streetlight, or considering a more substantial replacement of railing cables and hardware. The board also discussed using wood or different cable attachments if repeat vandalism makes annual repair costs unsustainable.

The board directed staff and maintenance to repair the primary safety elements (including fixing the frayed wire in the railing) and to monitor whether vandalism continues before committing to a full hardware replacement.
