Pittsboro parks director flags poor workmanship on new South Park court; council asks legal review

Parks staff told the Pittsboro Town Council on Tuesday that the newly constructed asphalt court at South Park has substantial construction defects and that the town is pursuing corrective action with the contractor.

Halley (speaker 4), the parks representative, showed photos and described issues she called the worst work she had seen: broom finish poured improperly in hot weather, inconsistent saw cuts that leave one end narrower than the other, a center area that is popping, and anchor bolt problems where the Sonotube bases for the goals were set but bolt sizes did not match the hardware. Council members and staff said the result may void warranty claims and that the contractor’s work could require removal and re‑pouring.

Council asked parks staff to provide the contract to the town attorney and to draft a demand letter; staff said they had already sent photos to the contractor and asked for a prompt response. The council also discussed options for grinding, removing and re‑forming the slab and said staff should pursue warranty remedies before authorizing further contractor payment.

Staff and council did not approve a specific remediation plan during the meeting but asked the town attorney to review the contract and assist in drafting formal correspondence to the contractor.
