Board hears athletics report as boosters donate $51,908.80 for spring coaching

The New Canaan Board of Education on July 21 received an athletics update that emphasized strong student participation and notable championships while flagging rising private costs for some programs.

Athletic Director Jay Egan (S2) said the district recorded about 850 unique athletes out of 1,251 students at New Canaan High School — roughly 68% participation — and noted multiple regional and state championships across fall, winter and spring sports. He highlighted individual recognitions and national and state coaching awards and described program features such as a standardized, transparent captain selection process and expanding strength and conditioning offerings.

Egan also described funding and facilities: the All Sports Booster Club provided $192,000 this year to supplement coaching positions and $31,000 toward varsity streaming; a privately funded fitness center renovation was completed. He warned that Darien ice rental rose from $535 per hour to $615 per hour, which would add about $13,360 to this year’s costs at current usage levels. Egan said Friends of New Canaan Ice Hockey typically reimburse amounts above Board funding, and the winter club holds the rink lease, limiting the district’s leverage on price.

Following the presentation, the board considered a donation: the New Canaan All Sports Booster Club offered $51,908.80 to fund additional spring coaching positions. The board voted unanimously to accept the gift; the donation will add 14 additional coaches for the spring season, according to district staff.

Why it matters: Athletics are a large engagement point for students and the community. Private booster support funds personnel and facilities that the district budget does not fully cover, and rising private costs for rented facilities could pressure future budgets. The board did not take specific budget votes beyond accepting the donation at this meeting.
