The board accepted the retirement letter of Controller/Treasurer Maureen McKenzie, who informed the board she will retire effective July 31 after 30 years of service. Board members and residents offered tributes and thanks for her long tenure.
During public comment, several residents raised the issue of the naming of the new Harrison Recreation Center. Rosemary Altamuro and others asked why the prior Salazzo name was not carried to the new building; speakers recounted local history and described confusion about recusals, the timeline for putting the name on the building and whether conflicts of interest had been handled. The mayor and town counsel explained that recusal procedures had been followed where appropriate and that renderings and project materials for the new facility had generally referred to the project as the "Harrison Recreation Center." Board counsel said he would provide legal advice and follow up with the board on naming and recusal questions.
The board did not take a formal vote on naming at the meeting but suggested the governance and legal processes would be followed before any final action.
