Council approves discontinuance of streets and alleys to clear site for law-enforcement project

The City Council voted unanimously to approve Resolution 899-2026, a measure to discontinue a portion of a street and multiple alleys in the Norton 2nd area to accommodate site changes for a planned law-enforcement facility. Dennis moved the resolution and Tim seconded; the motion carried after a unanimous roll-call vote.

According to staff, the abandoned rights-of-way will be absorbed into adjacent lots and a boundary-relocation survey will be completed and filed with the clerk and recorder after the new lot lines are established. Peyton, the public works director, said staff will undertake a survey and subsequent boundary-relocation filing once the lot reconfiguration is finalized.

Council discussion noted the area is near the fairgrounds and that the discontinuance is being driven by plans for the new law-enforcement center. Peyton summarized the procedural next steps: once the boundary relocations are surveyed, the new legal descriptions will be recorded and the council would see any additional petitions or agenda items tied to the boundary changes.

The vote was recorded as unanimous in favor. No public opposition was offered during the hearing on the discontinuance, and the public hearing was closed before the council acted.
