Culbertson council to meet with Youth Court after county curfew raised

The Culbertson Town Council on Jan. 4 discussed a possible countywide curfew after Deputy Duane Rasmussen and residents Dave Nickoloff and Tara Nickoloff brought the issue before the council.

Deputy Duane Rasmussen and the Nickoloffs said Roosevelt County does not have a curfew ordinance and asked for council input. Butch Olson of the Roosevelt County Youth Court requested that Rasmussen gather council feedback on a possible county curfew, the minutes show. Council members asked to meet with Olson to continue the conversation.

Council members suggested a draft threshold of “under 16” years old, with suggested hours of 10 p.m. on school nights, midnight on non-school nights and 30 minutes after school events. The Nickoloffs had sought advice about signing a document to place a 17-year-old on six months’ probation for a curfew violation; the council advised them not to sign because the town’s curfew code would not apply to a 17-year-old.

The council did not adopt an ordinance at the meeting; it requested a follow-up discussion with Youth Court. No formal vote tally on next steps was recorded in the minutes.

Next steps: council planned to meet with Butch Olson of the Roosevelt County Youth Court to consider countywide curfew language and applicability.
