Council adjusts mobile food vending rules in first reading, final vote deferred

The Nashville Town Council took up Ordinance 2026-09 on July 16, a first-reading proposal to regulate mobile food vending. Council members debated several provisions including an overnight movement requirement and a three-day limit for private-property events.

Members agreed to remove the requirement that a food truck be moved nightly and to allow a truck to remain overnight on private property with the landowner's permission, provided the operator is not living in the vehicle. The council also clarified that the three-day limit refers to three consecutive calendar days on a permitted site and that exemptions exist where a restaurant owner grants permission to place a truck closer than the 50-foot buffer from a brick-and-mortar door.

A motion incorporating the overnight-permission edit was made; however, councilors noted not all members were present and deferred any further action pending full membership. One council member announced an abstention due to desired further changes; the council agreed to revisit the item at a later meeting.
