Resident urges stricter code enforcement after months of Wellington Parkway construction

At the July 17 meeting a Wellington Parkway resident raised safety and code-enforcement concerns about a prolonged construction project near the bicycle and pedestrian path.

Janie Switzer, who identified herself and gave her address as 318 Wellington, said the house under construction since October routinely had vehicles parked in the path that serves approximately 800 homes from Turtle Walk and Bethany West, forcing children and adults into the street and creating an "accident waiting to happen." She also criticized repeated early-morning equipment use, saying: "When a machine starts up at 6AM, I called. When they showed up at 06:30, I called. When they worked until 07:30 or 8, I didn't call. But as a homeowner, I put up with that." Switzer said she has camera footage and that the builder had at times misrepresented activity to code staff.

Mayor acknowledged the complaint, asked staff to look into it and asked if the builder had stopped operations; staff replied the activity was done at the moment. Councilors and Switzer discussed both safety—blocked bike/ped path and cars parked in the middle of the street—and code compliance, including proper start/stop times and respect for neighbor rules.

The mayor said the town would review the complaint; Switzer asked for consistent enforcement so that builders are held to the same standards as homeowners.

What happens next: Mayor and staff said they would investigate the camera evidence and enforcement timeline and follow up with the resident.
