Board approves purchase of West Hamlin property for sheriff training center after fiscal debate

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners voted 16-1 on Thursday to purchase 3255 West Hamlin Road as a training facility for the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, approving the acquisition after a contentious discussion about cost and long-term fiscal prudence.

Commissioner Smith Charles moved the purchase; the motion was seconded and carried following debate. Commissioner Cavell opposed the measure on fiscal grounds, saying the county was being asked to spend $10.5 million on a building while current rent for the sheriff's training center was said to be increasing from roughly $12,000 to $36,000 per month. "If you just do the quick math," Cavell said, "that's over 24 years of rent," and he argued the county should consider renovating existing county-owned space or other options.

Supporters said the county must secure an owned facility to provide reliable, centralized training for deputies and partner agencies. Commissioner Spitz said the current rented facility was dilapidated and that owning a facility would provide stability for ongoing joint training across municipalities.

Chair David T. Woodward emphasized that the purchase was timed as the county faces rising rental costs and argued the acquisition could be financed and paid over many years to mitigate one-time capital pressures. The clerk recorded the vote as 16 yays, 1 nay; the resolution to purchase the property was adopted.

The motion and vote were part of the regular agenda after the item was moved off the consent calendar earlier in the meeting. Administrative staff will provide the purchase agreement and financing details to the board and to the Finance Committee for final contract approval and implementation steps.
