Mebane water resources director: new water resource recovery facility about 40% complete and on schedule

John Dodson, the City of Mebane Water Resources Director, told the Mebane City Planning Board that construction of the city’s new water resource recovery facility is about 40% complete and remains on schedule.

"We’re making great progress," Dodson said, noting that most of the major concrete structures have been completed and a large portion of the underground piping has been installed.

Dodson described the role of the facility’s filters, saying they "help remove any remaining fine particles" after multiple treatment stages and improve the effectiveness of final disinfection before treated water returns to the environment. He said the project is intended to protect local waterways, support future growth and provide reliable service to the community.

Remaining major construction items, Dodson said, include the new headworks channel, a chemical building and substantial electrical infrastructure work. He added that significant equipment installation and commissioning activities still lie ahead.

Dodson told the board that some startup and commissioning activities could begin as early as spring 2027 as portions of the facility are completed and tested, and he estimated the plant could be fully operational in late 2027 or early 2028.

He closed by calling the project a major investment in Mebane’s future and thanking attendees for following the updates.
