Developer seeks to erect tower crane for 19 Benedict Place; selectmen press for minimal disruption

AP Construction representatives told the Board of Selectmen on July 9 that they plan to erect a tower crane for the 19 Benedict Place apartment project and are seeking permission to stage the crane using the Benedict South municipal parking lot and a construction-hour variance for the erection weekend.

“My name is Peter Radman. I’m with AP Construction,” the presenter said, explaining that a tower crane would remain on-site to support construction for about 18 months and that the company is requesting use of the Benedict South lot (about 78 spaces) for crane staging during the proposed October weekend.

Selectmen acknowledged the need for a crane but pushed the developer to limit disruption. Selectwoman Lauren Raven noted Saturday shopping traffic and asked whether a midweek erection might be less disruptive; the first selectman said he would consult Deputy Chief Bonnie and parking services to identify conflicts and mitigation measures such as shuttles or alternate lots.

Radman said the company prefers a concentrated Saturday–Sunday schedule but is willing to consider weekday alternatives if that better serves the town. He added that trucking will be limited to West Putnam Avenue to avoid residential neighborhoods, and the team will monitor weather and set a rain date.

This was a first read. The board requested additional coordination with police and parking officials, neighborhood notification and a follow-up at the next meeting; no final permit or extended-hours variance was approved at this session.
