Historic‑district panel grants conceptual approval to rebuild balcony at 212 Estrada

The Fernandina Beach Historic District Council on Wednesday granted conceptual approval to reinstall a historic second‑floor balcony on the west elevation of 212 Estrada.

Mia Southerner, the planning department’s HCC staff liaison, told the council the application (HDC20202) included two historic photos from the museum and a proposed design that staff finds “congruent with other elements and unique details on the house.” She said staff believes the proposal meets the Old Town Preservation and Development guidelines, the land development code and the Secretary of the Interior standards.

Architect James Pizzetta, who represented the applicant, said the museum photos show the house previously had a porch and that the owner wants to restore the facade "to its former glory." Pizzetta said the submitted photos were grainy but that he used existing details from the house to develop the balcony elements.

Board members asked about the source of the historic images and the design details. Southerner said the photographs were provided with the application and had been shown during a pre‑application meeting; she recommended applicants consult the museum for additional photos if needed.

After no public comment, a council member moved to approve HDC20202 without conditions; a second followed and the motion passed on a unanimous roll call vote.

The council’s approval was for conceptual review. Staff and the applicant may return with final drawings and clarified details required for the building permit stage.
