Steege asbestos discovery and progress at Richmond and Kennedy highlighted in bond quarterly update

District bond-program staff delivered the quarterly update July 15 on three major modernization projects: Steege Elementary, Richmond High School and Kennedy High School.

At Steege, staff said Phase 0 is complete, Phase 1 (underground site preparation) is under way and Phase 2 is under Division of State Architect (DSA) review. The team reported removal and remediation associated with two former fuel tanks and said a naturally occurring asbestos discovery near the tank area is being managed with appropriate agencies; staff said remediation work is ongoing and schedule impacts will be shared as the situation develops.

At Richmond High School, staff reported progress: more than 250 piers have been installed underground and the project has moved into Phase 1.2 (building phase) with foundation pours and upcoming steel erection planned. The project team expects visible vertical progress soon.

Kennedy High School also reached milestones: elevator pit excavation is complete, electrical service has been installed and construction plans for a two-story classroom building and combined dining/performing-arts center continue in phased DSA submissions.

Staff invited the public to participate in the Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee meeting and to sign up for site tours. A previously scheduled community meeting for Steege on July 22 was postponed and staff said new dates will be provided.

Board members had no further questions; staff said they will return with updates next quarter or as remediation impacts are clarified.
