Truckee regional library project: design advances and fundraising passes midpoint

County Library Director Nick Wilczek and April Cole of the Friends of the Truckee Library updated the Board of Supervisors on the Truckee Regional Library project on July 14, reporting design milestones, community engagement and fundraising progress.

Wilczek highlighted a lengthy engagement process that the team said gathered about 4,000 community inputs into the library's design and programming. Renderings presented to the board show a larger children's section, a multipurpose community room designed for performances and classes, and outdoor patio space. April Cole described philanthropic, grant and agency funding strategies to supplement Measure G bond proceeds and fund community amenities such as the Weiss family community room.

Measure G passed with roughly 72% of voters in the Truckee region, producing a bond bucket estimated between $16 million and $19 million. Cole and Wilczek said the campaign set fundraising targets of $10 million for private philanthropy and $10 million for grants and agency funding; they reported roughly $11 million raised across those buckets so far.

Next steps are completing value engineering this month, finishing construction drawings and agency review, and selecting a contractor in spring 2027. Wilczek said the team hopes to reach full funding within a year and begin construction in August 2027 if schedule and funding permit.

Board members praised the community outreach, the project's emphasis on children and teens and the active role of the Friends of the Truckee Library in fundraising. The board accepted the presentation unanimously by roll call.
