Director reports spike in intake, vaccination clinic results and expanded Emancipet spay/neuter capacity

Director Dangler presented monthly shelter operations and program updates, including intake and outcome metrics and partnerships to expand sterilization services.

Dangler said a June drive-through vaccine and microchip event (in partnership with Austin Humane Society) vaccinated and microchipped roughly 197 dogs, 76 cats, 27 kittens and 21 puppies; donated vaccines were secured through Petco Love and used to purchase rabies vaccine when necessary. She reported 1,540 animals taken in for the month (a 12% increase from May 2026), a live-release rate of 95%, 608 adoptions, 377 volunteer families fostering and 495 transfers to rescue partners. The shelter recorded about $52,000 in emergency medical invoices for the month.

On spay/neuter capacity, Dangler described adding an extra weekly Emancipet mobile clinic day and voucher/alternate-clinic arrangements for large dogs that cannot fit on mobile vans (roughly a 50–60 lb threshold). She said Emancipet could provide approximately 1,500 additional surgeries tied to current funding plans; commissioners requested a written breakdown of the math (seeking clarity whether 1,500 is additional vs. total over the year). Staff agreed to provide clarifying documentation and monthly breakdowns from Emancipet.

Dangler also introduced an always-on customer-experience survey (QR code and link) to capture visit reasons and feedback across intake, adoption, field and foster interactions. Commissioners raised issues about 311 guidance on animal calls and suggested cross-training or closer coordination to improve caller information during peak events (for example, July 4 fireworks spikes).

The commission did not take formal votes on budget or program changes at the meeting; members requested follow-up materials to verify spay/neuter projections and the Emancipet schedule.
