Project representatives presented conceptual plans to reconstruct the Kelton House’s damaged rear service wing and to add an enlarged event space for the Junior League and museum programming. The Kelton House suffered a gas-explosion-related fire affecting the rear wing; presenters said the main house interior was largely salvageable and that the proposed design aims to restore the visible exterior character using salvage brick and traditional materials while providing a larger, more functional event space and improved visitor flow.
Matthew Brown (Moody Nolan) said the fire originated in the kitchen/service wing and that the attic and main volumes largely retained structural integrity; the team showed historic documentation they said would support reconstructing the wing to appear historically compatible. Deborah Cummings (Junior League) highlighted that the Kelton House is a documented Underground Railroad site and that the expanded space would support educational programming and school visits that the museum had outgrown.
Commissioners voiced broad conceptual support but emphasized key design principles: clearly differentiate new construction from the historic fabric so the addition does not read as an original element; retain and protect major trees and garden spaces; consider a glazed or set-back connector to read as an addition rather than a replica; and minimize the footprint to avoid removing significant landscape features. Staff asked the project team to refine massing, ground-level views, and materials during design development. The item was conceptual only; no formal approval was requested or required at this hearing.
