Staff briefing: training deadlines, recruitment and upcoming community events

During the July 17 meeting staff delivered a routine briefing covering internal operations, trainings and community engagement activities.

Staff said leadership meetings reviewed high-level policy and operational topics and that director-level staff attended training on death records, autopsies and related materials. Staff highlighted a state-mandated "working safely with AI" training that must be completed by July 26, 2026 and said enrolled users will receive email reminders and compliance reports.

On personnel, staff reported the complaints-investigator posting closed June 26 and attracted 27 applicants; interviews are scheduled for late July as part of a plan to fill the position by the end of August. Staff also said four formal complaints were forwarded to Internal Affairs between June 18 and July 10.

Community engagement items listed by staff included multiple outreach events in July (North Austin Muslim Community Center activity, Hillside Concert Series appearances, a pop-up resource clinic, a "know your rights" relaunch press conference on July 31, and a District 6 budget meeting on July 25).

Staff said drafting of the CPRC annual report is underway and budget discussions will ramp up in August. Commissioners asked for copies of the director's report and for clearer communication when staff briefings are posted.

Next steps: staff will continue recruitment and onboarding, circulate the director's report on request and provide compliance reminders for required training.
