Planning board acknowledges community tragedy and discusses support for an impartial investigation

A planning board member used the other‑business portion of the July 15 meeting to raise concern about a community tragedy earlier in the week in which federal agents killed a local resident. The member asked whether the planning board would consider formally asking the city council to support the state's request for an impartial investigation.

"Federal agents killed one of our neighbors... I wanted to ask the planning board if there was an appetite to try and support state efforts to request an impartial investigation into what happened," the Committee member said during the meeting. The Chair responded that the mayor and city council had already publicly expressed support for an impartial review. Several other members and staff praised the police, fire and public works departments for coordinating during protests and ensuring public safety, with staff noting that personnel assisted with traffic control, water distribution, and site safety during local demonstrations.

Board members characterized the request as largely procedural for their body (which has limited jurisdiction over law enforcement matters) but said they were sensitive to the community's concerns. The board did not pass a formal motion on the matter during this session; the Chair and others noted that city leadership had already taken positions and that any formal request would likely come through the city council.
