Wylie Parks and Recreation Board reelects Nick Puente as chair, names Scott Hevel vice chair and approves multiple community events

The Wylie Parks and Recreation Board on July 13 re-elected Nick Puente to a one-year term as board chair and approved a slate of community event permits, including youth and adult sports fundraisers and a Wylie ISD Council of PTAs festival.

Board members opened the meeting at 5:33 p.m. and followed a standard nomination-and-second process before voting. A nomination to elect Nick Puente as chair was seconded and carried with seven yes votes. The board then nominated and unanimously re-elected Scott Hevel to a second term as vice chair.

The board considered and approved several event permit applications during the regular agenda. Wylie Area Youth Sports presented two requests: a Back-to-School Bash at Founders Park on Aug. 15, 2026 featuring 7-on-7 games for children and families plus vendor booths and food trucks, and a 7v7 adult tournament on Oct. 25, 2026 intended to help launch an adult flag-football league. The applicant said vendors would include spirit-wear printing on site and two to three food trucks, and that proceeds from the Oct. 25 tournament would go to the Huddle Project, a donation program that helps pay registration and uniform costs for children in need. The board voted to approve both events, with unanimous support.

The board also approved a request from the Wylie ISD Council of PTAs to host its annual "Back the Future" community festival at Old City Park on Oct. 3, 2026. Lauren Gibson, programs chair for the council, said the free family event will include school booths, mascots, bounce houses, free food and up to 150 vendor booths; PTA booths will be provided at no cost. Board members confirmed there would be no alcohol sales at the event and asked about vendor types and fees before voting to approve the permit.

An application from Connection Point Church for its 5K "Run for the Fatherless" on Nov. 21, 2026 was initially tabled because no representative attended the meeting. The board later voted to untable the item after staff confirmed a representative could appear; the organizer reported that last year’s run raised $12,000 with roughly 120 participants and that vendor arrangements typically include a licensed coffee truck that contributes a portion of sales. The board approved the run permit by hand vote.

The board closed the regular agenda after routine business and adjourned following a motion by Tara and a second from Elizabeth. The board also scheduled an annual facilities tour for Aug. 10 after the regular meeting.
