Furnas County Board approves museum tax exemption and multiple valuation protest adjustments

The Furnas County Board of Commissioners, sitting as the Board of Equalization, approved a permissive exemption for the Furnas‑Gosper Museum and adopted a series of property valuation adjustments following a public hearing on July 14, 2026.

Assessor Sherry Thooft presented the exemption request and a packet of valuation protests and corrections. The BOE approved the museum’s permissive exemption on a motion by Commissioner Dennis Tegtman, seconded by Commissioner Allan McCoy; the vote was recorded as Ayes: Mike Sexton, Dennis Tegtman and Allan McCoy.

Thooft also reviewed Property Valuation Protest Form 422 items and said the property owners had agreed to the assessor’s proposed changes for a long list of parcels (protests identified in the record). The board approved the valuation protest adjustments on a motion by Tegtman, seconded by McCoy, with unanimous aye votes. No members of the public attended the hearing.

Earlier in the BOE session, Thooft presented RE tax list corrections for 2023–2025 and an Over/Under Valued & Clerical Error Report; both were approved on motions by Commissioner McCoy, seconded by Commissioner Tegtman, with the same recorded unanimous votes.

The BOE actions affect assessed values and potential tax bills for the parcels listed in the hearing record. The board reconvened regular business after the BOE adjourned at 9:55 a.m. The next regular board meeting is set for July 28, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
