Fairfield police announce National Night Out plans, celebrate department award

At the July 8 meeting, speakers outlined a slate of community-outreach events and recent recognition for department staff.

Speaker Jude Thwad announced that National Night Out will take place Aug. 4 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Sherwin Green, with touch trucks, food trucks and public-safety tables planned. "We're trying to make it one of the biggest ones that are occurring with touch trucks and food trucks etcetera," the speaker said, and invited the commission to host a table and participate in outreach.

The department also highlighted recent fundraising: a Torch Run led by Kevin Wells, who was named among the top-10 fundraising agencies in Connecticut for his work, and upcoming 5K and golf outings supporting a scholarship fund and the foundation. Speakers noted the Fairfield Country Club will host a separate event that will require additional officers and create parking and traffic challenges.

Separately, the department said it will accept a Police Department of the Year award from the Connecticut American Legion at a Marriott ceremony; the department was nominated by the American Legion of Fairfield. Speakers expressed pride in the department's community engagement work. No event permits, budgets or operational deployments beyond staffing the traffic unit were detailed in the meeting record.
