Library board opens discussion on space study, invites state library briefing; sets Aug. 7 deadline for strategic-plan ideas

The Englewood City Library Board discussed beginning a formal space study and potentially inviting the Colorado State Library to brief the board on statutory roles and best practices as officials plan for downtown redevelopment.

A board member asked whether the library is leaning toward renovating the current facility or taking a different approach to location and layout. Rachel Fuell, the library director, said staff are planning a space study with a designer to assess collection sizes, seating, and service points and to consider where the library might best serve the community. “We’re still working on this project, to do a space study, to engage with the designer and figure out what… if our numbers, collection numbers, our seats, our service points, are laid out appropriately,” Fuell said.

Fuell suggested the board could invite a representative from the Colorado State Library to explain statutory obligations and state standards. The board discussed whether that presentation should be scheduled as a longer standalone meeting to allow adequate time for questions; members suggested an hour would be appropriate if the state representative attended.

Board members also agreed to an internal process for generating strategic-plan ideas: staff asked members to send any proposed goals or ideas to the board administrator by about Aug. 7 so staff could compile submissions and present two or three items for the next packet. The board flagged this as a way to focus on both near-term, low-cost actions and longer-term goals tied to a 2027 framework.

Next steps include staff reaching out to a Colorado State Library contact to check availability and preparing a packet of submitted ideas for board review.
