Huntsville ISD welcomes Superintendent Fanning, highlights instructional rollout and athletics

Board President Holland welcomed Superintendent Fanning at the Huntsville Independent School District’s July regular meeting, calling the leadership transition "a stewardship for a season" and urging trustees and staff to "steward well" the district as they prepare for the school year.

Fanning used his first regular board meeting to congratulate the Hornets football program for qualifying for the state 7-on-7 tournament on June 26–27 — "This is the first time in school history that our football program has achieved this milestone," he said — and to highlight planning for fall athletics, classroom readiness and a recent three-day leadership retreat. He described the retreat as an opportunity to build shared vision and improve instructional leadership across campuses.

The board also received a brief digital report on the leadership retreat, which included team-building events at Sam Houston State University and reflections from district leaders on the theme "we build champions." Matthew, who presented the digital report, said the retreat was the district's first under Superintendent Fanning and will inform monthly leadership work throughout the year.

During the meeting Dr. Dixon introduced the district’s new director of human resources, introduced in the transcript as "doctor Bonnie l Bomar." The new HR director told trustees she was "truly, truly excited for the opportunity to serve our community and to work alongside the amazing team that we have here."

President Holland closed the open-session portion of the meeting by reminding trustees of upcoming dates: convocation on Aug. 5, a budget workshop on Aug. 6 and the regular August meeting on Aug. 20. At 6:29 p.m. the board recessed to closed session.

The board did not take further open-session personnel actions during the meeting; the HR director’s appointment was presented as an introduction to trustees.
