Sparta board approves consent items: sewer, waterline, vehicles, hire and compensation study

The Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a series of routine consent items and departmental requests during its meeting, including contracts and purchases for public works and public safety, personnel actions and a consulting contract for an employee compensation study.

Items approved included: minutes from the June 18, 2026 meeting; the low bid for the CBD grama sewer project; low bid for waterline upgrades; purchase of a 2026 Silverado 3500 HD for Public Works (Wilson Motors, $57,267, state contract); purchase of a 2026 Ford Police Interceptor Utility (Lonnie Cobb Ford, state contract); approval of the financial director’s May reports; hiring Austin Lowry for the street labor position; and contracting with BTA Consulting for a citywide employee compensation study.

Board members asked a brief procedural question about the compensation study’s schedule. A board member and staff (identified in the record as Tanya) said the consultant cannot begin until the contract is approved and that the consultant hoped to have the study completed and presented to the board by November. Each item was approved following motions, seconds and roll-call votes, with affirmative votes recorded from the members present.

Board members also approved a package of expiring board appointments, including reappointing Travis McBride to the Parks and Recreation board.

The approvals are budgeted items or state-contract purchases when specified; the compensation study is a new consulting contract for review of employee pay structures.
