Cheverly police report arrests and warn of rising juvenile 'takeovers'; sergeant promoted

Cheverly’s police leadership reported several recent public‑safety developments and honored personnel during the July 9 council meeting.

Chief David Morris told the council that on July 2 a suspect vehicle involved in an armed robbery in Bladensburg was located in Cheverly and that officers were able to take a suspect into custody without incident. “A very good observation” by a new officer led to the arrest, the chief said.

The chief also warned that juvenile‑led vehicle takeovers and pop‑up car rallies have increased in frequency and danger across the region, citing recent incidents in nearby jurisdictions and a Maryland State Police presentation showing widespread activity. He said local departments are coordinating with county and state partners and that he would ask the mayor and council to assist in contacting delegates and senators to address growing concerns.

Chief Morris announced a planned RFP for consolidated automated enforcement activity expected around Aug. 1 and highlighted Deputy Chief Jennifer Krause’s selection to serve on a statewide commission reviewing special police training and certification.

The meeting included a ceremonial swearing‑in and promotion: the council swore in Officer Kyle Griffin and promoted Marvin Valencia (ID 1730) to the rank of police sergeant. Chief Morris and family members praised the officers’ commitment during the short ceremony.

What happens next: staff will continue coordinating with regional law enforcement and pursue the RFP process for enforcement consolidation; the department will report back on outcomes and scheduling from those efforts and on any follow‑up related to juvenile rallies and enforcement.
