The Clay County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to keep the solid‑waste disposal assessment at $96 and the collection assessment at $262 after staff presented analysis on the cost of curbside recycling.
Milton Towns, director of environmental services, told the commission that, under the current contract and market conditions, processing recyclables costs roughly $145 more per ton than disposing of household trash and that the gap would translate to an estimated annual expense of about $530,000. "That alone equates to over $530,000 a year estimated," he said, and added that transport and collection costs for recyclables are also higher than for general waste. Based on those figures, staff recommended continuing with the current curbside configuration and keeping collection fees unchanged.
Why it matters: bringing curbside recycling back under contract would raise collection costs unless the county offsets the increased processing expense. Commissioners discussed the tradeoffs between service levels and keeping fees stable for residents.
The motion to keep the fees as presented passed by voice vote with no opposition. Staff said the vendor contract and market prices will continue to be monitored and that the board could revisit service levels if processing economics change or contract terms permit alternative arrangements.
