The New Albany Architectural Review Board on July 13 tabled an application for a certificate of appropriateness for a new home at 6905 Central College Road (Old World Custom Homes, Patrick Miller) to allow the applicant to refine the west elevation and screening for a rear garage and sport court.
Staff summarized changes the applicant made since the prior hearing: reduced garage height, coordinated with the city architect, provided renderings, and reorganized the material hierarchy to use stone in key locations while retaining an overall cohesive architectural character. The ARB had requested revision to garage massing, a more cohesive architectural style across elevations, and 3-D renderings at the prior meeting.
Board members focused on a long, largely unarticulated west elevation behind the sport court. Several members said the elevation would benefit from additional windows, trim, a hip return or dormer changes, false eaves, or other articulation to avoid an applied, “fake-window” appearance. The applicant’s architectural designer, April Small, explained the interior program — a raised ceiling over the hoop in the sport court — constrained window placement and said the team could explore trim, faux dormers, or minor projections to improve cadence while keeping interior function.
Members also discussed driveway visibility and screening of a cater/parking pad at the rear, and several suggested additional landscaping and a masonry screen wall to mask headlights. One board member offered to sketch suggested revisions for staff to pass to the applicant.
After discussion, a motion to table the application for 30 days passed unanimously so the applicant may return with revised west-elevation treatments, additional details on screening and landscaping, and any other adjustments requested by staff and the city architect.
