Fire chief reports successful fireworks operations, Huff Hollow fire response and training needs

The Huntington fire chief (speaker 7) briefed the council on the department's July 4 operations and recent wildfire response, praising mutual-aid partners and outlining training and staffing needs.

The chief said the department ran a successful fireworks operation with help from the Bureau of Land Management and smoke jumper crews; one small spot fire was extinguished quickly and there were no injuries. He reported the Huff Hollow fire was recorded at about 1.6 acres and required an eight-hour response involving Huntington firefighters, three firefighters from Cleveland, a Forestry Fire and State Lands assistant fire warden and four smoke jumpers that were diverted from en route duties.

The chief discussed reimbursement rules under the city's MOU with the state: engines and personnel can be reimbursed for incidents on federal, state or public lands if minimum red-card wildland certification requirements are met; if an incident is on private land, the state reimbursement does not apply. He said the department has seen a decline in red-carded personnel and listed recruiting and training (Utah Fire Rescue Academy and wildland-focused training) as priorities.

The chief also highlighted outreach to support more female firefighters (noting prior participation as an instructor at a female-focused fire camp) and said the department will continue to pursue certifications and fitness training to sustain wildland response capabilities.

The council thanked the department; no formal action was taken beyond hearing the report.
