She described PCRG’s larval light‑trap network (about 51 sites in Washington), juvenile intertidal surveys, a 2025 tagging effort and collaborative genetics work to distinguish coastal versus Puget Sound larval sources.
Barber reported methods and early results: two distinct larval cohorts (an early larger cohort and a later smaller cohort), lab growth trials that showed early cohort crabs remained larger, and a tagging pilot in 2025 that returned roughly a 14% recapture rate—within the range considered useful for crustacean tagging studies. She said the tribe’s light‑trap and intertidal methods are shared across PCRG and are used to inform management discussions.
Panelists pressed on why shellfish have historically received less investment than salmon; Barber and others pointed to cultural attention and political priorities that have long favored salmon, methodological difficulty studying crabs, and institutional barriers to hosting a formal research coordinator. Barber described how PCRG struggled to find a host organization and only later gained support from a restoration fund to house core staff.
Barber stressed capacity constraints: tribal staff lead much of the shellfish work and often lack time and boats to scale independent surveys. She and other panelists urged investment in systematic, fisheries‑independent monitoring and better integration of tribal datasets into regional management so that harvest rules are based on broader, more reliable indicators than fishery‑dependent catch data alone.
