Austria Solar reports small thermal event; site work resumed after repairs and variance approved for vegetation work

John Volz, representing Cypress Creek for the Austria Solar project, updated the council on site repairs and a safety variance following a thermal event in May. Volz said an investigation confirmed a single borehole‑assembly part dislodged, pinched DC cable and exposed a conductor; that exposure led to a spark and a small fire. The facility was shut down for a 100 percent visual inspection; the affected string and one solar panel were replaced and the damaged panel was recycled.

"We have completed the investigation and did confirm the findings that it was a single piece of ... borehole assembly equipment that became dislodged," Volz told the council, adding that all affected equipment was tested before re‑energizing the site on June 24.

To reduce near‑term fire risk driven by rapid vegetation growth, the certificate holder requested and received a conditional variance allowing vegetation management before the site’s usual restricted date. Volz said mowing crews were on site with water trucks and personnel to prevent sparks during the work.

What’s next: Final performance testing is ongoing; ecology’s final inspection was scheduled for 07/21; project staff will continue to coordinate final operational permits and will post any required documentation to the project record.
