Board extends emergency declaration on wolf depredations after staff reports dozens of incidents

Siskiyou County staff told the Board of Supervisors that wolf depredations have continued into 2026 and recommended extending the county's emergency declaration; the board approved the extension.

"In 2026, we're at 36 confirmed depredations and 6 probable depredations," Joanne Johnson, project for county administration, said when summarizing staff findings and the recommendation to extend the emergency.

Johnson told the board that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife had not finalized determinations on a set of investigating reports and that county staff would receive a list from the state to allow staff to add information and resubmit reports to CDFW. Board members discussed prior federal delisting efforts and regional coordination to address livestock losses; one member noted the federal work had stalled after the passing of a lead congressman.

A motion to extend the county emergency on wolves was made and seconded; the board recorded votes in favor. Staff will provide the CDFW list to county counsel and return with any updated determinations.
