Council approves change order for Castle Pines Parkway reconstruction after contractor issues with concrete panels

Council approved a change order to the Castle Pines Parkway reconstruction project after staff and the contractor encountered problems removing concrete panels. The city’s engineering representative explained that saw-cutting revealed shifting panels that damaged equipment and hampered production, and recommended removing the existing concrete pavement (except curb and gutter and medians), installing road base and placing 6 inches of asphalt instead.

Staff said the project can be completed within the current project budget because of savings from eliminating some contract items and that the Metro District will cost-share approximately 25% on the relevant sections once agreements are finalized. A council member asked whether the change would produce additional cost to the city; staff said the project savings covered the change order and that Metro District participation was being coordinated.

Council members voiced support for the approach as a sensible long-term fix and the resolution approving change order number 1 passed on a recorded vote.
