Newtown Board meets in executive session to consider weapons-detection system

The Newtown Board of Education voted July 14 to enter an executive session to discuss the district's security strategy and the implementation of a weapons detection system, according to motions recorded in the meeting minutes.

D. Linnetz, a member of the Newtown Board of Education, moved that the board "enter into executive session to discuss the security strategy and the weapons detection system implementation and invite Superintendent Uberti to join," and J. Vouros seconded the motion. The board entered the executive session at 7:03 p.m. and exited at 8:16 p.m., per the minutes. The minutes record that the motion to enter executive session "passed unanimously." Superintendent Uberti was invited to join the executive session, the minutes say.

No public participation was recorded for the meeting. After leaving executive session the board approved a motion to adjourn, again moved by D. Linnetz and seconded by J. Vouros; the meeting was adjourned at 8:17 p.m. The minutes list A. Plante; M. Beylouni; D. Linnetz; J. Vouros; D. Ramsey; and S. Tomai as present, with C. Gilson absent. The minutes do not disclose the substance of the executive session discussion. The public record therefore shows only that the board met privately to discuss security strategy and a weapons detection system; no public votes on policy or procurement related to that subject were recorded in the minutes from this special meeting.
