Council weighs leasing or cleaning 'lot back here' used by parks and streets

Chair (Speaker 2) opened discussion about a city-owned lot used as parks and streets headquarters and asked councilmembers for direction on whether to retain, clean up, lease or pursue sale or long-term lease options. "Do we want to continue that to be our parks and streets or whatever?" Speaker 2 asked.

Speaker 1 argued the site might not be the "highest and best use" and suggested leasing or cleanup and marketing to private parties to realize value. Speaker 4 and others noted the lot adjoins the water plant and has service bays and parts storage that make it operationally useful. Speaker 7 said there is value in holding city property for future equipment access and potential expansion.

Council discussed limited remediation, including mold abatement and extermination, and whether to bring in commercial developers for a third-party assessment of marketability. Speaker 3 suggested staff could contact developers who have worked in central Texas for an appraisal and assessment. "Do you invest do you put money into it now or do you hold off?" Speaker 3 asked.

Directions and next steps: staff will arrange a third-party assessment of the yard, return cost estimates for minimal remediation to make the office usable, and present options for leasing or marketing the property before finalizing budget allocations.
