Ocean Pines holds first reading of sign-rule changes tied to pending state law

The Ocean Pines Association Board held a first reading of proposed changes to its ARC guidelines that would align the community’s political-sign rules with a pending state law.

Elaine presented the first reading, explaining the proposed amendment applies to political candidate and referendum sign requirements and would alter the time period for displaying political signs from 30 days to 45 days "if the bill gets signed." Elaine said the change would apply to early-voting windows as well if the governor signs the legislation.

Bruce emphasized a key change in the law: signs may be posted 45 days prior to the beginning of early voting, not just 45 days before election day, and the board discussed the timing given the Association’s next regular meeting schedule. The chair noted that because the board’s next meeting is near the legal timing window, the board may hold a special meeting or use an email vote to adopt the change quickly once the governor signs the bill.

This was a first reading and not a vote to adopt; the board indicated a second reading and formal vote will be required and that adoption depends on whether Governor Moore signs the bill. The board reiterated that signs must be placed on homeowner property (the area from the ditch to the street) and not on medians.
