Father of fallen deputy asks county to pursue memorial sign; resident urges denial of two solar projects

Jerry Carter told the commission he is the father of Deputy Sydney Carter (end of watch Oct. 7, 2022), described three fundraisers his family organized and said the family dedicates itself to keeping Sydney's legacy alive. "I am actually the father. Deputy Sydney Carter. Whose end of watch was 10/07/2022," Carter said, describing donations to the Wichita Police Mounted Unit and the county sheriff's K-9 unit and noting the passage of HB 2747, "Sydney's Law." He requested county guidance on installing a memorial sign at the crash site on 135th Street West and 29th Street North; county leaders said they would coordinate with the sheriff and public works and report back.

Mary Grogan, a Clearwater resident, spoke against two proposed solar projects (referred to in testimony as the Galena project and the TED project), telling the commission that MAPC recorded roughly 34 speakers in opposition to the Galena project and cited petitions she said contained about 1,000 and 1,100 signatures opposing the two projects. "In summary, there is a great majority of citizens, voters, taxpayers, and ratepayers against these 2 projects," she said and asked the commission to deny the projects when they come before the board on Aug. 5.

Procedural follow-up

The commission moved to receive and file public comments; the motion carried by roll call vote 5-0. Staff (including the sheriff's office and public works) committed to follow up with Mr. Carter on feasibility, property-owner permissions and any necessary engineering or legal steps to pursue a memorial sign at the described intersection.
