Plain Dealing aldermen introduce salary ordinances for town clerk and police chief, hearings set for June 9

The Town of Plain Dealing Board of Aldermen on May 12 introduced two ordinances that would change municipal salaries and scheduled public hearings for both on June 9, 2026.

Alderwoman Shavonda Gay moved to introduce Ordinance No. 2 of 2026, an ordinance to amend the salary of the Town Clerk; Alderwoman Emily Jennings seconded. The motion carried with all members present voting in favor. Mayor James Cook said a public hearing on the ordinance will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 in the Town Hall meeting room at the Leon Sanders Jr. Municipal Complex, 205 West Palmetto Avenue.

The board also introduced Ordinance No. 3 of 2026, which would increase the salary of the Chief of Police. Alderwoman Shavonda Gay made the motion to introduce Ordinance No. 3; Alderwoman Shanithia Gay seconded, and the motion carried unanimously. Mayor Cook announced the public hearing for Ordinance No. 3 will also take place at 6:00 p.m. on June 9 in the same meeting room.

There was no public comment recorded on either ordinance during the May 12 meeting. The introductions establish the ordinances for public notice and set the dates for hearings where residents may comment before the council considers final adoption.

Next steps: both ordinances are scheduled for public hearings at the Town Hall on June 9; no votes on final adoption were recorded on May 12.
