Plain Dealing aldermen remove N. Calhoun property from standards list, approve community-center bookings and review parade rules

The Town of Plain Dealing Board of Aldermen on May 12 removed a N. Calhoun property from the town's property-standards list, approved multiple community-center bookings and asked members to review parade and special-event rules ahead of a future discussion.

Mayor James Cook reported that a resident had notified the council that a tree had fallen on a house at a N. Calhoun property; the motor had been removed from a vehicle on the property and the vehicle was no longer there. On a motion by Louis Welch, seconded by Emily Jennings, the council voted to remove the property from the property-standards list. The motion carried with all members present voting in favor.

The council approved seven community-center applications, including events by Community House of Prayer and Calhoun Chapel CME Church, plus private gatherings scheduled between May and August 2026; several fee-waiver requests were noted. The motion to approve the community-center applications was made by Shavonda Gay and seconded by Louis Welch and carried unanimously.

Mayor Cook asked aldermen to review the town's parade rules and the proposed special-events contract and return suggested changes at the next meeting. The mayor also reminded members to submit personal-disclosure forms and noted a sweet gum tree near the Cartwright building needs removal; Town Attorney Doug Dominick advised soliciting three requests for proposals before contracting the tree work.
