Maryville schools report strong statewide rankings, construction progress and a new assistant principal

Director of Schools Dr. Winstead told the Maryville Board of Education on June 15 that the state has lifted the embargo on district report cards and that Maryville City Schools ranked second in Tennessee for the percentage of students scoring proficient or advanced on English II and Algebra II End-of-Course assessments, third in U.S. History EOC and sixth-grade English language arts, and third overall statewide in student achievement.

Dr. Winstead also announced the appointment of Elijah Harris as assistant principal at Coulter Grove Intermediate School; Harris most recently served as a sixth-grade math teacher at the school. He provided updates on facility projects: construction at the Early Intervention Center is nearing completion with exterior work remaining; Maryville High School construction has reached the tops of the buildings and the drive behind the auxiliary gym is expected to reopen by mid-August for daytime deliveries and Friday night events; and grading at Sam Houston Elementary is nearly complete with enough work done to start the new school year while remaining work will continue through the next months.

Dr. Winstead said, aside from a few interim positions, the district is fully staffed and preparations are underway for the New Teacher Breakfast and iReach training ahead of the new school year. The board recognized the Maryville High School Symphonic Band for selection to perform as a Featured Guest Ensemble at the 2026 Tri-State Honor Band Festival hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
