Resident complains about delayed yard-waste pickup and late tax bill; clerk and public works respond

At the start of the Nov. 11 meeting, Parksley resident Diann Bendix raised two service concerns: delayed pickup of yard trimmings and receiving a real estate tax bill late in the mail.

Bendix told the council she placed nine bags and two trash cans of pine cones and trimmings at the curb on Oct. 19; the town picked up the nine bags on Nov. 6 but left the two cans. She said the remaining debris was causing her grass to die and urged crews to finish pickup at a single house before moving on to others. Vice Mayor John Parks and Public Works Director Danny Siegert told her the department is short one worker (Ben Wilson left) and that different equipment collects different materials, which can delay full pickup. Parks asked Siegert if he could get her cans picked up that week.

Bendix also said she had just received her annual real estate tax bill (the county print date shown as Oct. 17) and was concerned about having fewer than three weeks to pay before the Dec. 5 due date. Clerk Letitia Greer explained Accomack County prints the tax bills for the town and office staff mail them after receiving the county's print run; she noted staff had provided an early courtesy copy for one resident who requested it. Greer reiterated that tax bills are due annually on Dec. 5.

The council did not take formal action beyond instructing staff to address the pickup and explaining billing procedures.
