Shelburne commission backs planting plan and seeks better management for LaPlatte Nature Park

The Shelburne Natural Resources and Conservation Commission on July 8 unanimously supported a volunteer planting plan to help suppress invasive regrowth at LaPlatte Nature Park.

Lindsay Bryce and Ilana Sobo told the commission they have been clearing invasives at LaPlatte and proposed introducing donated trees and other plantings to reduce regrowth. The commission voted 8–0 to support the plan, provided the proposal does not draw on the town’s Open Space Fund; Jason Girard moved the motion and Cathy O’Brien seconded it.

The commission also discussed longer‑term management of the park. Bryce said a local farmer currently cuts and takes hay from the park at no charge, and commissioners said better planning and coordination are needed to balance agricultural use, habitat protection and increased recreational use. Commissioner Sean MacFaden noted recent increases in visitor use that are creating new maintenance needs. Chair Chandler Noyes said the commission should engage the Bike & Pedestrian Paths Committee on trail implications.

Stormwater Superintendent Shayne Geiger said he will investigate whether town funds might support planting or management work. Bryce and Sobo will email the Selectboard chair with their proposed planting plan and ask whether Selectboard approval is needed.

The commission flagged potential funding and volunteer support; trail maintenance tools are available for borrowing at the library.
