Me Time Book Club founder previews growing 'Behind the Ink' festival, asks council for support

Miss Williams, founder of the nonprofit Me Time Book Club, told the Birmingham City Council on July 14 that the group's annual book festival, Behind the Ink, has expanded rapidly since its 2021 debut and is seeking continued city support. "I founded this in 2011...our mission is to spark and influence our community one literary work at a time," she said, describing programming that includes author panels, a children's corner, vendor booths and community partnerships.

Williams told the council the festival hosted New York Times bestselling authors in multiple years, registered over 600 attendees in 2025 and benefited from sponsorships and partnerships including the Harvard Center, the Literacy Council of Central Alabama, the Birmingham Public Library and local businesses. She said the organization's programming also includes a Little Free Library, author events and periodic community service such as donations to Grace House Ministries.

Williams said the next Behind the Ink festival is scheduled for Sept. 25 at the Harvard Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and asked the council to consider supporting the event. Councilor Daryl O'Quinn and other members praised the effort; O'Quinn told Williams, "I really appreciate how much effort it takes...assembling all the support." Council members asked the presenter to share slides and additional materials with city communications and council staff, and Williams agreed to provide them.

The presentation did not include any formal request for funding on the council floor; Williams asked for continued collaboration and thanked Mayor Randall Woodfin and District staff who have supported prior festivals. The council did not take an immediate vote on any action following the presentation.
