Planning board approves aromatherapy shop at 40–42 East Main with restrictions

MIDDLETOWN — The City of Middletown Planning Board on July 8 approved a special‑use resolution to allow an aromatherapy business at 40–42 East Main Street, contingent on the applicant securing any required building or DPW approvals.

Planning staff described the proposed operation as a diffuser‑based aromatherapy service; the resolution on the record explicitly prohibits massage, acupuncture or any services that would involve a practitioner touching or manipulating clients. "The resolution specifically states there'll be no massage or use of any other products that are placed, rubbed, rolled, or held by clients. It is strictly for the use of a diffuser with different scents," a staff member told the board.

An interpreter at the hearing identified himself as Apple and said he was representing the applicant (noting the applicant as "Sofia" in the record). The chair and staff told the applicant to check with the Department of Public Works and the building inspector about any permits or ventilation requirements before opening. After a roll‑call vote with all members recorded in favor, the board adopted the resolution.

After the vote the interpreter asked, "So I can open the store?" and staff advised that the applicant must first confirm DPW and building‑permit requirements. The board directed staff to relay any outstanding permit or code obligations the applicant must satisfy before occupancy or business operations begin.
