Hyattsville council approves revised retiree health coverage for current retirees, changes eligibility for new hires

The Hyattsville Mayor and Council voted July 13 to approve staff recommendations on retiree health benefits that preserve coverage for existing retirees and employees hired before July 1, 2026, while removing eligibility for employees hired on or after that date.

Staff explained the only substantive change from the version discussed previously was removal of a provision that would have required retirees to enroll in other employer‑sponsored coverage when available; staff said the city currently lacks a reliable mechanism to validate external coverage and therefore removed that requirement. Council members who have followed the issue for multiple sessions praised staff work on the compromise and asked for a future review of any verification process should the city develop one.

Councilmember comments reflected appreciation for the subcommittee work and concern about long‑term liabilities; one member urged continuing work to craft a fair mechanism to address dual coverage in the future. After discussion, the council moved and approved the staff recommendations.

Next step: staff will continue developing any vetting or attestation processes and will return recommendations to council if a feasible verification system is proposed.
