CJCC frames juvenile homicide as a ‘wake‑up call,’ discusses funding and community options for youth services

Members of the Sawyer County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council used the July 8 meeting to discuss a recent juvenile homicide and to press for expanded prevention and youth‑engagement efforts.

A committee member framed the death as a ‘‘wake‑up call’’ for the community and urged less blame and more support for at‑risk youth, saying trauma and family losses are often underlying factors. "We're villainizing these children who are maybe making really bad decisions... they're still kids," the member said, urging approaches that prioritize wraparound services and supports.

The Chair and multiple members discussed practical prevention steps the council can support, including using prevention and opioid‑settlement dollars for public messaging such as billboards, and backing school policies the group said are already reducing screen time (the Hayward district’s "no phones from bell to bell" policy was mentioned). Members also discussed exploring community recreation options — including the possibility of pursuing a local YMCA or promoting low‑barrier pickup sports and other supervised activities — to give youth safer, structured alternatives.

Members raised barriers to youth participation in organized sports (cost, travel, parental availability) and noted that school discipline policies can exclude some students from school facilities and activities, which may increase the need for community alternatives. The council agreed prevention, coordinated partner meetings and budget advocacy will be part of next steps. The council confirmed the next CJCC meeting for Aug. 12 at noon and adjourned.
